The thyroid gland is important in many ways and what it does is control the levels of TSH hormones. There are two kinds of thyroid condition, one being hyperthyroid where too much is produced, and the other hypothyroid which is where insufficient levels of TSH hormone are produced.
The symptoms of thyroid problems that affect the likelihood of pregnancy are as follows:
Intolerance to cold.
Tiredness and lethargy are other signs.
Constipation.
Muscle Cramps.
The inability to feel fresh after a good night sleep
Slow and sluggish metabolism
Weight gain
The symptoms differ from person to person, though if a patient finds that they are not able to become pregnant and suffer from any of the above signs, then finding out if this is affecting their fertility isn't as complex as one might think. A simple blood test gives definitive results, and in the hypothyroid patient, the TSH levels can be adjusted with a medicine called Thyroxine.
This is a common ailment that in most cases can be controlled, although it may take time to get the balance right. Once the TSH levels are correct, this can be eliminated from the equation as a cause for infertility, and thyroid patients can have children although there are dangers during pregnancy that the patient should be aware of. Keeping to their treatment is not only important for them. It is important for the development of the child, and will be lifelong treatment even after successful pregnancy, tested periodically to ensure that the levels stay at their correctly balanced amount.
Thyroid problems may be a reason for infertility, though if treated, do not stop the natural process of conception.
