Splitting commissions can work in favor of the salesman. No one can wait on everybody at the same time. In cases where I found myself already tied up with
a family and a repeat customer comes in to see me, I gladly would ask for assistance
rather than lose another deal completely. However, splitting commissions is quite
different than having your sale stolen by another employee. Unfortunately this is
also a reality when working in sales. As a manager of a department I witnessed this
happen more often than not. One sales person will have a day off and another employee will drop his name off the invoice before the sale closes. On top of putting your livelihood on the line you can get the reputation of a snake among
your peers. If the culprit is not fired, he is given enough suspended days to realize that his gesture was not worth it. The most effective way to handle a situation like this is to report it to a manager.
