New moms are often overwhelmed with mixed emotions and plenty of things to do when the baby arrives. Be a helping hand. The best gift that can be given is the gift of friendship. Don't overcrowd mom, or try to tell her how to be a parent, instead, help out the best you can. There are so many different gift ideas for a new addition. If you have any doubts, just ask mom what she needs.
Create your own gift bag. Remember both mom and baby. Throw in lotions, soaps, magazines/books, house shoes and sweats for mama, gift cards, or even toys. As far as disposable diapers are concerned, remember there is no such thing as too many. (The average newborn goes through at least ten diaper changes a day.)
Give mom the luxury of knowing what the baby is doing even when she isn't in the room. Buy her a baby monitor. A simple monitor has a transmitter and receiver. They are usually portable and pick up sounds easily. This is a great idea for moms who have chores and other things to do. They can move around easily through the house and not worry about their little angel in the next room.
Babysitting is more precious than silver and gold. Offer to watch the baby and let mom take the day off. Maybe she has errands to run, or just wants to marinate in the bathtub for awhile. Whatever, the case, assure her that you have things under control and let her relax and not lift a finger. Moms deserve a break, also.
Housework can often pile up when a new baby is born. Take some time out of your schedule to help the new mom with some chores. Offer to help with the laundry. Run the vaccume. Sweep the sidewalk. If it needs to be done, do it. That is one less thing mom has to do.
Precook a few meals and freeze them. If mom gets busy, she can just unthaw one and heat it up. This will make her life a lot easier. She doesn't have to add "Slave over a hot stove." to her list of things that need to be done. Ask if she will be offended before you do it. Some people, though they mean well, have their intentions misunderstood.
Let the new family know that you will be there for them. If they need anything, let them know they need not hesitate to ask. Be a good friend and support system. If mom is sad, give her a shoulder to cry on, and ears to listen if she needs to talk. Who could ask for anything more?
