Just as my first marriage was falling apart, I was blessed to find a great job with a local school system. I was miserable at home and miserable at my job at a hospital, so this was truly a Godsend.

It wasn't much. I was the production technician in the print shop. I would be copying, laying out forms, putting booklets together and binding them, and helping out the printer. But to me it felt like play all day.

Good thing, too, as the pay wasn't very good, but I had vacations with my daughter (except the summer) and they were very liberal in their understanding of parent issues. And when they reworked the school districting, I was able to keep my daughter in the school I preferred, as long as I dropped her off in the morning.

The printer, who was also my supervisor, was a fabulous guy who was easy to get along with and always eager for any input and help. I actually missed this man when he took vacation! There is nothing better if you have to be a working parent than to wake up and not dread your job.

I had to leave in 2001 when I remarried and my new husband had gotten a job 1000 miles away. I cried my whole last day of work.

After working for and with so many crummy people, it was wonderful to have a job I loved.
