Meta tags are one of the most underused tags by webmasters. The reason that they are so underused, isn't because most people don't know what they are intended for, it's because most people question whether they actually work.
Meta Tags were essentially created so that search engines would be able to better list websites by using the descriptions, titles, and other information that you provide for them. The ultimate problem with this, is that many search engines, don't even index using meta tags, so the question is whether or not they even serve any real purpose. The large majority of major websites are currently using the text in which the search term was found. This is the method that is used by Google, Excite, and a variety of other major search engines. So if the majority of the major search engines are going to completely ignore your meta tags, then what is the utility in creating them?
Well, I used to question the utility in creating meta tags, when they serve little to no purpose for the majority of your search engine traffic. However, you'll find that even though it's only a small amount, you do get quite a bit of traffic over a period of time directly from somewhat smaller search engines that do in fact read the meta tags. So, if you are interested in better serving this traffic stream and capitalizing on those potential visitors by having a higher quality meta tag, then by all means, you should definitely consider working on your tags.
In a meta tag there are several tags, but only a few actually do anything worthwhile. It seems that the large majority of the meta tags were created just to take up space, because they don't seem to really serve much utility. Here is a sample meta tag that I created for Helium, using fake information just to illustrate the idea. This is literally all that there is to META tags and you could easily create your own using this exact same code and filling in your own personal information into the spaces. Keep in mind, since Helium doesn't allow for HTML in articles, I have placed spaces in the front and back of the coding in order to ensure that it would show up for this demonstration.
