The purpose of running stadium stairs for cross training, is one of need. Cross training implies that an individual is preparing his or herself for a physically demanding event. Stadium stairs simulate one of the most demanding of all encounters, the navigation of a hill. Many stadiums are located in urban areas, devoid of hills. Consequently, a serious competitor or a multi-faceted Coach will utilize all aids at their disposal.
Running hills and or stadium stairs requires a mix of physical attributes, thus separating the tough from the not-so-tough. The huge leg flex-or muscles are screaming for relief, as lactic acid pours through the capillaries. The cardio-vascular system is working overtime from the additional workload. Psychologically, there is no explanation as to "why I should do this, only that I must." A trainer or a coach calls stairs and hills, "vitamins for the legs!".
Keep in mind the distinct advantage a competitor has over his opponent when fatigue sets in. The individual with the complete (cross trained) package, has leg lift when there should be none, like in the 4th quarter. How about a cross-country runner hitting sandbag hill at the last half mile of league finals? Running stadium stairs for cross training is an invaluable work-out for the dedicated athlete, or any aspiring individual wishing to push the mind and body to peak fitness.
