There is no player more dominant in the game of baseball than the pitcher. The pitcher is without a doubt the most important player in a game. They control the pace of the game, and are the ones that will ultimately determine whether or not their team has a chance of winning the game. If a pitcher gives up too many runs, then the team has to work harder to makeup for that deficit, but if the pitchers doesn't give up any runs, the pitcher allows the players to stay in the game by keeping it close. With how important the pitcher is to the game, it is important that pitchers use every possible advantage that they have at their disposal in order to ensure their success on the mound.
One of the most important aspects of pitching however, is the ability of the pitcher to maneuver and control the ball. Without control of the ball, the pitcher will be throwing 'flat' pitchers, which are substantially easier for hitters to hit. This means that a pitcher needs to focus on obtaining a better grip on the ball, so that they can generate a far better spin. With this spin, the ball is much more difficult to hit and gives the pitcher a better chance at retiring the side without incident.
One of the biggest problems with grip came long ago when baseball budgets had to be limited, so there were only so many balls that were allowed to be used in an individual game. Because of this, baseballs became much more worn throughout the game and would become slick over time. Along with any weather conditions, the balls would be come substantially harder for the pitcher to grip. This is a major reason why pitching became so dependent upon the use of outside materials in order to better grip the ball for pitching.
Throughout the years, there have been a wide variety of methods used in order to give a pitcher a better grip on the ball. From the use of honey, to tree sap, even types of glue. However, with each one of these methods can controversy as these different methods would each have a negative impact on the ability to hit the ball as well as field it. Because of this, baseball was forced to changed the rules of the game somewhat. With these rule changes, pitchers became limited to what they can use. They became using talcum powder as a means of drying off their hands, this was especially important during wet games. They also began experimenting with other powders, but the product that seemed to work the best, while still being legal, was the rosin bag.
