The secret to perpetual happiness

Of course there really is no such thing as a "secret" or "magic key" to open the gates of happiness. While there is no way avoid to birds of sorrow, as the famous saying goes, there certainly are ways to keep them from nesting in your hair. Here are some quick suggestions to consider.

1) Laugh more often. There is a Quaker maxim that reads: make light of your troubles. Laughing off a mistake can save you from years of self-battery. Plus, people with a sense of humor are nice to be around, and your friends will certainly appreciate it. It may even rub off of them. So do everyone the favor of keeping things light.

2) Don't worry so much. It's been said too many times to count, which leads me to believe there is at least some merit to the suggestion. Whether you take your cue from MAD magazine's mascot Alfred E. Newman, who is oft quoted as saying "Me, worry?" or the Biblical passage in which Christ asks "which of you can add one day to your life by worrying," you will certainly find yourself a happier person by letting go of the thing you cannot control.

3) Think more of others. Treating other people well can do wonders for your life. After all, friends are more likely to go out of their way for you if you go out of yours for them. It's a healthy cycle in which everyone takes care of everyone, and happiness is bound to find its way into your life.

4) Take a risk once in a while. Sometimes, a leap of faith will land you in the most rewarding place. Even if things don't end up exactly as expected, at least you'll be left with some good stories in the process.

5) Have a little spontaneous fun. Routines and predictability often make people feel bogged down by life. Break the routine-try new things. Have a good time!

I hope this list starts you down you own unique path to a happy life. Good luck!
