Corner entertainment centers are, by far, rather convenient. You can use them in a corner, obviously, but you can also place them against a wall. They come in all shapes and sizes. However, being a carpenter I really don't advise them. Here's why.
You don't get the adequate space you would generally need for various equipment. Nor the room necessary to store movies, or DVD, games, etc. Not only that but you have to deal with the excessive width of the unit. Mine sticks out thirty inches off the wall. I don't use it in the corner because I would have to move it when ever I needed to connect or disconnect a piece of equipment.
However, if you only plan on having one dvd player, or something of that nature, attached to the TV then having a corner unit is the perfect choice. You could tuck it away in a nice corner and it adds a little flavor to the room.
Most entertainment centers come in a variety of woods, however the cost is relatively high. If you intend only to keep it for less than ten years I would suggest getting a prefabricated unit in a box. You can bring it home and assemble it yourself in a matter of a couple of hours. Provided you have to proper common hand tools required. If you go this route make sure to check the box for the list of tools.
If you are looking for something more permanant, I would suggest contacting a trustworthy contractor. They will be able to give you ideas and suggestions. As well as build it for a reasonable fee. Depending on the size and storage capabilities your looking at a twenty five hundred to four thousand dollar investment. If you do not intend to spend this much on a corner unit, you may want to turn you attention towards a standard flat back unit.
A built-in unit will last longer and is far more reliable than a store bought unit. However given the price, most people choose the latter of the two. My personal opinion is this. If you want something nice and fancy you can show off, build it. If your just looking for something functional, buy it off the self. And don't assume that just because the price is right, that the unit you buy will be what you expect, especially if you hire a cheap contractor.
