The Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram is the most widely known Golden Dawn ritual; it is also the most misunderstood. In the original Golden Dawn, the only personal ritual a student learned in Outer Order was the Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram. Today, not only is it used by Golden Dawn based Orders, but many other traditions have incorporated it into their systems (often without due credit).
There was never an official lecture written about the ritual by the founders of the Order, or at least I have never encountered one in the course of my duties as a lodge officer. This lack of official instruction has left the field open for everyone to come up with their own opinion about what the ritual is accomplishing, and what forces are being utilized by its performance.
Unfortunately for the student, a lot of these theories have made their way into print; quite a few being included as part of the instructions for the Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram by various writers. There is nothing wrong theory being included, except for the fact that the theories may be wrong-something that the beginner has no way of knowing.
I suggest that the student actually practice the Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram twice daily for a couple of years before they are exposed to any of the theories about the ritual. But let's be honest, only a brave student will take that advice.
The ritual itself is quite simple as the following rubric shows:

2. Touching your heart, vibrate Malkuth (Mal-Kuth).
3. Touching the right shoulder, vibrate ve-Geburah (Vay-Gay-Boo-Raw).
4. Touching the left shoulder, vibrate ve-Gedulah (Vay-Gay-Doo-Law).
5. Placing both hands together over the heart, vibrate le-Olahm, Amen (Lay-Oh-Lawm, Ah-Men).
6. Advance to the EAST, with the right hand draw Pentagram, and then make the Sign of the Enterer while vibrating YHVH (Yod-Hey-Vau-Hey).
7. Draw line to the SOUTH, draw Pentagram, and then make the Sign of the Enterer while vibrating ADNI (Ah-Doh-Nye).
8. Draw line to the WEST, draw Pentagram, and then make the Sign of the Enterer while vibrating AHIH (Eh-Hey-Yeah).
9. Draw line to the NORTH, draw Pentagram, and then make the Sign of the Enterer while vibrating AGLA (Ah-Ga-La).
10. Draw line to the EAST, completing the Circle, facing EAST extend your arms in the form of a Cross and
