Web design tips: File naming conventions

occurances of the same key word, poetry. The search engine spiders are going to pick it up twice in your link, and then will probably pick it up several times in the body of that particular page. Because of this, your site is going to appear to be a much more valid site for finding poetry.

You also need to consider what type of file you are going to use as well. If you are coding in html, then just simply use the .htm extension. This is the most common method and the most recognized method, but you can also use .html as well. They both represent the fact that you are using HTML in that particular page, but .htm is the much more utilized method, most likely because it is simply shorter.

You also need to consider that there are many other file types as well, such as .jsp, for javascript, .php, .asp for active server pages, .cf for cold fusion, and a variety of other extensions as well. If you don't use the extension that the page is written in, then your page isn't going to load properly, so keep this in mind whenever you are naming your files. If something doesn't work, there's a good chance that you use the wrong file extension when naming it. Try changing the extension to see if that makes a difference. In a lot of instances, just changing this extension can mean the difference between a page showing up or not showing at all.

But most importantly, when working with the files in your website, make sure that you are careful. There is nothing worse than accidentally deleting or losing a file because of carelessness. This is something that is completely avoidable, so be smart, and be careful with whatever you do on your server. This can have a huge impact on the overall success of your website.
