It was the end of March 2002. As a sophomore, I decided that I wanted to attend Prom, but I needed a date (I'm from a small school-everyone goes to Junior Prom). I was crushing on this popular boy, who was my childhood friend, but I knew the probability of him going to Prom with me would be small. So, I started looking at other options. My husband was one of my fellow classmates, and we had gym class together. He started to draw my attention because he would tease me and flirt in gym. Basically, he sparked my curiosity. I spoke with his best friend (who I had also crushed on prior to this-ah, high school) and, of course, his friend mentioned to my husband that I was going to ask him to Prom. I found out what class he had after gym and plotted the "asking". It was the Friday before Spring Break and I just popped my head into the classroom he was in (for his 2nd hr class) and said, "Hey, I was wondering if maybe you'd like to go to Prom with me. Just as friends." He made a big show of thinking about it and finally said, "Sure, why not." As soon as I could, I made up an excuse to go tell the exciting news to my Mom (she was an elementary school teacher in a different wing of the school).
My husband and I didn't speak again until two weeks before the Prom (which was to be held on my 16th birthday-my parent's agreed to an after Prom party). He called me, super nervous, to find out the details for Prom. We talked for hours!
Our first date was a week before Prom. I invited him to my sister's play. The most memorable parts of that evening were when he shook my Dad's hand and ran around the gym with my little brother. He was such a gentleman.
Prom was successful and we decided that we were "going out." Our anniversary was my birthday. After a month, we had talked for hours and hours each night, and we had met each other's families. Our relationship blossomed and we became fast friends, as well as boyfriend/girlfriend. I went from barely knowing this man (we didn't run in the same "circles") to being his best friend and sharing all my feelings with him.
We have been through many hardships together (he's currently finishing his time in the Navy) but we're still completely in love. We were married on December 23, 2006-in total, 5 years. Thus far, marriage has been good to us. We plan on having children after his Navy time is over (1 1/2 yrs). He will be the best father. I thank God every day for blessing me with my husband-he is truly my soul mate, the best match for me.
