Most people know about aerobic exercise, which is focused on building endurance. Athletes are aware of the importance of incorporating aerobic exercise into their workout routines so that they can increase their endurance threshold and perform better for longer.
It would be easy to assume that rowers, who typically row many miles in competitions or simply for training and conditioning, are more concerned with aerobic exercise than any other form of training; however, this is not the case.
In fact, many rowers are more concerned with including anaerobic exercise into their routines, in order to build muscle mass which will help them make more powerful strokes against the strength of the water. Actually, the beginning phases of all forms of exercise are anaerobic. Essentially anaerobic exercise is comprised of brief, but intense, physical exertions.
Rowers are concerned with anaerobic exercise in order to increase the power they need to excel during short, sprint like competitions in the water. Anaerobic exercise gathers energy from living tissue within the muscle which is produced without any oxygen. Muscles that develop under anaerobic training conditions, without a supply of oxygen.
Of course, aerobic exercise is still crucial to endurance and prolonged exercise, so rowers still incorporate it into their routines.
