It is a fact that an effective salesperson is confident. But what is this top salesperson confident in, or about? Are they confident in themselves and their abilities? Are they confident in their product? I submit that both of these types of confidence are necessary to being an effective salesperson. Furthermore, both types of confidence can be built, from the inside out.
SELF-CONFIDENCE
A salesperson who hesitates, says "Uh" during a spiel, and doesn't walk tall is basically wasted space. Self-confidence is a must in sales. Having complete self-confidence also makes you a non-pushy salesperson, but keeps you focused on whatever goals you have. So how do you build this self-confidence?
First, you have to remember that you were hired as a salesperson. That means that your boss, who we can assume is in the know, believed that you could be an effective salesperson. Knowing that you are trusted to do a good job builds confidence mightily.
Second, to build self-confidence, it can help to reflect on past successes. Think about your most recent sales and ponder on what worked and what didn't. When you can see what works in sales, you can make a plan for the strategy you will utilize on your next interaction. Going in with a plan is a nice way to keep confidence high.
Finally, get with your colleagues. Discuss successes and good sales methods. Review the strategies for immediate closing of deals. Having this knowledge fresh in your mind will pump you up and get you read to sell, sell, sell!
CONFIDENCE IN THE PRODUCT
It is easy to see that if a salesperson is not confident about their product, they will likely not move much of said product. So how do you build confidence in your product? Educate yourself. Get to know every aspect, every feature, and every good thing about the product. Keep this knowledge fresh in your mind through regular mental reviewing or through memory activities done with your colleagues. Feeling certain that you can answer any question about your product is a great confidence booster.
So becoming totally familiar with the product and also knowing how to handle any situation will keep your confidence high. Remember that anybody can be a salesperson. And anybody, with the right confidence, can be a killer salesperson.
