I have five children and four of them have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD and PDD. All of them are on medication and what a difference it's made! The kids are more focused and calm. They respond when you talk to them and they aren't bouncing off the walls fighting with each other. Medication can make a world of difference in a child. The positives out weigh the negatives by far.
I have two with PDD. Then one with ADHD, and another with ADD. Without the meds they are so difficult and out of control. My six year old has PDD and he is in his own world when he is not on his medication. Making contiuous noises and in his own world. The medication brings him out of his shell and calms him down so he can focus on his school work and he is doing great!
My special needs son who is 12 and is mentally and emotionally impaired with speech and language delays is also PDD. He is on a lot of medication for his mood disorders. Without the meds I think he would be so violent and out of control he would probably kill some one eventually. Temper tantrums daily, fighting and hitting everyone because he can't get his way. Sensory issues, and so emotional he will cry for no reason. The medication helps him to regulate his moods.
ADD/ADHD is a big issue among children today. It seems more and more kids are being diagnosed with it and if the kids need a little help with their focus in school and help with staying on task. I am all for it! My kids would have a hard time in society without it. Thank God for medication!
My decision to medicate my kids is not wrong. I am doing what I think is in their best interest and it helps them in school. My 8 year old was suppose to get held back and when I got him tested and they gave him adderal, it was like a miricle drug, he started to write and read better and started to learn more in school. He is almost caught up to his grade level now and they are surprised at school at how good he is on the medication.
You need to be the judge though with your kids. You may be actually harming them by not putting them on medication. You may be hindering their ability's, so pray about it and talk to doctor's that know something about certain drugs that help.
There are certain drugs that you can talk to your doctor about. There is Strattara which is not a stimulant and the doctors perfer that one. My daughter however kept getting stomachache aches with that one.
There is Concerta. That is a good one, then there is Adderal which three of my kids are on and that seems to work the best. Only, it may cause a loss of appetite.
Keep checking and asking questions about the different medications and don't forget to ask about the side affects.
