A significant part of ballet terms are in French, here are some and what they mean:
A LA SECOND; To the side or second position
APLOMB: Stability of the position
ARABESQUE: In Arabic Fashion, The position of the body supported in one leg with the
opposite leg ( with the knee straight) extended behind the body, The back
leg may either touch the floor (IN TENDU) or be raised in the air in an
angle upperback up and not fallen forward.
ARRIERE: Moving in a backwards position.
ASSEMBLE: A jump brining both legs together while in mid air, then land on both feet.
AVANT: Move forward
BATTERIE: Several techniques involving jumps
BRISE: Similar to assemble
CHAINES' Chain turns
DERRIERE: A step to the back
DEVANT: To the front
ELEVE: Going from flat feet to rise in point.
FOUETTE: To whip
GLISSADE: To glide
GRAND PES: Big or large step
GRAND PLIE: Beding of the knees
PAS; A step
PASSE: The working passing close to the knee
PIROUETTE: One of the most famous ballet movements where a dancer spins around on
demi point
PLIE: Smooth and continuos bending and straightening of the knee
RELEVE: Raise your heels off the ground
RONDE DE JAMBE: Circles of the leg
SAUTE; Jump
