Memoirs: Have you ever fallen in front of a person and what was your reaction?

by Monica K

When a pregnant woman has a craving, it must be fulfilled IMMEDIATELY! If not, all hormonal chaos breaks loose. She becomes whiney, demanding, cranky and completely discombobulated! Eventually, all normal functioning breaks down. Several years ago, I experienced the results of such a hormonal tragedy.

It was a bitter cold winter morning, and I was about 5 months pregnant with my son. I awoke early with an incredible craving for anything and everything sweet. After a fulfilling and oh-so-healthy breakfast of jelly-filled donuts and a couple bowls of cereal it was time to head to work. But, I had not had enough! As I headed to the door, I actually heard the scrumptious, creamy cherry cheesecake screaming my name from behind the refrigerator door. Why, I couldn't just leave it in there, when it wanted out so bad, so I decided to pack it up and allow it to accompany me to the job! So, I sliced off a small piece and put it back in the refrigerator (just in case someone else wanted some, I didn't want to be rude) and threw the rest of the pie in a container to bring along!

The cheesecake really wanted to meet my unborn child and I could feel the activity as he kicked away so violently in an attempt to escape the womb and head to cheesecake heaven. But, I do not practice pregnant indulgent eating and driving, so I had to force myself to wait until I got to work. As I walked out of the parking garage and headed to the workplace, I imagined myself sitting at my desk with an empty pie pan in front of me as I licked the last of the ooey-gooey cherry topping off of my fork. I couldn't get there fast enough, and this man, dressed in business attire and walking swiftly toward me looked as if he too, were on a mission. I was hoping he would get out of my way, and quick, as I was sure that mine was more important!

OUCH! The next thing I knew I was lying flat on my back staring at the early morning sky. "MY CHEESECAKE!" I looked to the side and there it was, escaping my hungry grasp and headed quickly down the icy sidewalk right toward the street and rush hour traffic! I could not let it get away! So, as the nice-looking, courteous businessman bent down to ask if I was ok, I jumped up and raced toward the cheesecake and..... IT WAS A SAVE! It goes to show you, that nothing can get in the way of a pregnant woman and her cravings!

At that very moment, it didn't occur to me what that scene must have looked like. However, as I completed my pregnancy and gained back my pre-pregnancy sanity, I began to re-play this incident in my mind and still to this day, find myself overcome with embarrassment! I had to look like a crazy fool, lying on my back with baby bump pointing skyward, worried about nothing but my cheesecake!
