Re-defining terrorism: The first crucial step in resolving terrorist conflict

by Dolf

While there are many forms of terrorism in today's world. The major terrorist conflict comes from two directly opposing ideologies. The Western Judeo-Christian belief that the greatest sacrifice one can make is to sacrifice one's own life for the benefit of others is easily recognized and understood by everyone in the Western World. In direct opposition is the Middle Eastern belief that one becomes a martyr and saint by sacrificing one's life to destroy as many as of one's enemies as possible. We have two easily stated ideologies in direct opposition.

The Western belief has a basis in Christian teaching, i.e., the teachings of Jesus Christ. However, scholars will indicate that the Middle Eastern belief does not have a basis in the teachings of Mohammad nor is there a basis for this in the Koran.

Radical Islamic clerics are supporting this belief of revenge and retribution that does not recognize the sacredness or importance of each indivual's life. As long as there are willing disciples for suicide missions, terrorism will not be overcome. How than does one cut off the flow of willing volunteers?

The key is the education of Muslim women and the raising of their stature in their culture. They have an important stature in the Koran but not in present day Muslim cultures. For thousand of years they have been a repressed class. Until they have the same rights to education and worth as their male counterparts and as long as they are a repressed class, terrorism continues.

Once Muslim women are educated and exposed to the major philosophies of the world, than and only than will they be able to teach their children that their lives have value and meaning and that all life is sacred. Once the Muslim Matriarchy speaks out against the needless and worthless slaughter of their children, than and only than will terrorism begin to fade.

Expanding the philosophical horizons of Muslim women will cause their children to question terrorist leaders and finally ask why they must make the sacrifice of their lives and not their leaders. Until the recruits begin to question the fact that it is the new recruits who are asked to blow themselves up and not their leaders, terrorism will continue.

This solution will take time. What might be done now to limit and curtail terrorist acts? A unified resolve on behalf of Western nations is what will be the deciding factor. The Western nations must unite to successfully reduce and eventually eliminate terrorist
