Gift registry tips for the engaged

The most exciting ritual for most engaged couples is the creation their gift registries. Whether you've each lived on your own or you co-habit together, the first thing you should do is sit down and make a list of all of the items you will need in your new life together. Make sure that you also include decorative items, and even specialty items that relate to your favorite pastimes.

Now that you know what kinds of things you want to include in your registry, it's time to decide where to register. I recommend choosing 3 to 5 different stores. You don't have to register for the same items at each store, but this way your friends and family will have a choice of where to go to buy your gift. My fiance and I chose to register at Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Linens~N~Things, and Williams-Sonoma. Whichever stores you choose, make sure that your gift registry can be accessed online through their store websites. This may be helpful for out-of-town guests who might not live in close proximity to any of the stores with which you have registered. It's also convenient if you want to register without leaving the comfort of your own home.

Once you've chosen your stores, you now need to begin adding items to your registry. Make sure to choose items of all price ranges in order to give your friends and family a nice selection of items to choose from. Keep your guests in mind as you register, and try to limit your choices at $200 or less. Your friends and family will be more likely to buy gifts from your registry if they are affordable. This doesn't mean that you need to completely shy away from expensive items; just try not to make those items a hefty portion of your registry.

Registering can be a lot of fun, so if you choose to register in-store make sure to bring along your husband-or-wife-to-be. I have yet to meet a man who didn't enjoy running around a store with the scan gun, scanning everything he desires. It's a great way to relieve some of the stress of planning your wedding while spending time with the man/woman that you love!
