Karla Homolka, one of the most notorious serial killers in Canada was released from jail, after serving all 12 years of her plea agreement sentence. She and her then-husband, Paul Bernardo, struck fear into the hearts of parents all over southern Ontario by abducting and killing Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French. When Karla Homolka struck a deal with the Crown Attorney to give evidence against her husband, she downplayed her role in these vicious crimes. Had the police found the videotapes, proving what she and her husband had done, she likely would have been declared a dangerous offender.
Since Ms. Homolka's release from jail, she has become a new mother, and is begging the press to leave her and her new husband alone. Largely this relates to her belief she has paid her debt to society.
I would suggest that at no time will she ever have paid the price for her actions. She callously was a part of the murder of her sister and two other young girls. While she may not have been the primary instigator of the crimes, she was certainly a willing participant. She has not acknowledged her role in these events, she has not completed the programming required for sex offenders and she has never apologized to the families of her victims.
While Ms. Homolka may have served her sentence, her debt has not been repaid.
