How to handle split commissions

SPLIT COMMISSIONS

Often in business commissions are split between field workers, or field workers and their support team, and usually your contract will tell you if this is the case when you take a job as a salesman.
Although it hardly seems fair that you should be out there selling to make extra money for others, it is worth stepping out of negative thoughts and working out how you can make even better money and even though shared, earn more.

SALES STAFF

Feedback to sales staff of possible leads is a great way forward. The only work you are involved with is providing them with the names of those companies that you come across in the field that may be interested in your product. These openings happen in meetings, and don't really add to your workload, although sending the feedback in, you should try to motivate those staff that do the follow ups and ask for reports of which leads were followed up, and action required. That way, you are getting the sales staff to earn their proportion of money from your potential.

OFFICE BACKUP

When someone working in sales is out on the job, it really is essential to have back-up, the finance to work out business lunches, to get all those brochures together that you may need, and to make sure that your cash flow situation is capable of change at five minutes notice. Involve your office. Motivate them, get them to make the appointments, and be involved on a day to day basis, because shared responsibility for achieving sales justifies the sharing of commission.

Sales staff often gripe about having to share or split their commissions, though opening up channels of communication, finding ways that your support staff and sales staff can help you in the field improves communication skills, but also motivates the whole team to work well together, both sides knowing that their split of the commission was a merited one.
