The most common role of an arborist is as a trained and insured tree removal or tree maintenance professional. These are the people you often see scaling large trees with chainsaws and cherrypickers as they remove parts of a tree or the entire tree. Many are also experts on trees and some may hold degrees in horticulture or agriculture. This knowledge allows them to make informed decisions about the best ways to maintain or remove different species of trees.
They are commonly employed in urban areas where special tree removal skills are needed due to close proximity of homes and other structures. It is a trade of skill and knowledge. Some also work overseeing the maintaining of areas such as parks, large gardens, and indoor tree exhibit. They may also employ their knowledge in a variety of consultant type positions such as for gardening supply stores, writing for gardening publications, and in general communicating the importance of trees to nature and how to properly maintain them.
