We celebrate Easter to celebrate the risen Christ. One of the most tragic and unfortunate things to happen in Christianity(in my opinion) is the correlation between ancient pagan holidays and rituals and the placement of Christian Holy Days. One of the things that comes to mind is the Sabbath. Originally observed by the first churches on Saturday, it was eventually moved to Sunday as a way to get the Pagan converts to observe a Sabbath to God.(For many of them, their Holy day was Sunday)
The same thing can be said as to the time of the year we celebrate Christmas. No one knows for sure when Christ was born or what time of the year, but ancient pagan festivals observed the winter solstice and would hold pageants and festivals to celebrate the survival of life throughout the long cold winter. What better time of year to celebrate the birth of new hope then in the dead of winter?
Easter time is celebrated in the same way. The new Christian Holiday coincides with the old pagan holidays. These were set up I believe, not only as a way to get converts to participate in the Church's Holy Days but also as a way to dissolve the old pagan ways and make room for the new Christian beliefs. You have to keep in mind how many converts came from paganist backgrounds.
Do I get offended when the Easter Bunny becomes prevalent during this time of year. Yes I do, but at the same time I understand that the church's willingness to place its holiest of of days around these ancient observances, will always bring the conflict between the world and God to a head. And maybe that was the thinking all along.
This one truth I do know. It does not matter when the Holy Christian holidays take place, what matters is that they do.
So I will reiterate: we celebrate Easter to celebrate the risen Christ. And we gladly do so in the ever eternal hope and promise that His truth will overshadow the lies of the world.
