Another baseball season with steroid rumors?

Another season and another steroid rumor filled baseball extravaganza. This article is old and the time has come to rewrite or leapfrog my work. There is only one problem. In the two years since I wrote this article NOTHING has changed. The rumors still are flying rampant. The latest victims are Manny Rameriez and Alex Rodriguez. There are no sacred names, today's baseball is watched with a permanent asteriek attached.

The world series will come and the world series will pass. The big question is when will the rumors stop? How is major league baseball protecting its image as America's pastime. Well, I can tell you that most of us will sit back and watch the smooth running train that is MLB derail and crash into a smoldering steroid fire.

A train wreck happening right in front of your eyes. Baseball is losing its appeal as America's sport. News Flash: USA did not win the World Classic. So with the falling numbers, both revenue and viewers, a new type of drama is unfolding. Unfortunately for MLB it is the great steroid question, ala Jerry Springer style. No where is this circus more in the publics view than the great Barry Bonds show. This one man has single-handedly become the figurehead of steroids in baseball.

It all started with a skinny runt in Pittsburgh hitting decent numbers. Next thing you know the media is doing cranial measurements and his personal trainer sits in jail not saying a word. Did he or didn't he use? That is now the popular question and it intensifies with every swing of his bat. He just clobbered home-run 735 yesterday. Is this going to be a so called asterisk record? To find that answer we must endure the hoopla surrounding this tarnishing of baseball as we know it. Not to many people payed attention when he broke the Babe's record. I doubt very many people are concerned if Barry Bonds hits 50 more home runs or suddenly quits and retires. The majority of people just don't care and the steroids rumors have been the cause of it all.

This writer is fair unlike the media. Is Barry Bonds the sole problem with baseball and the steroid rumors? Not at all. Just look at the other players implicated. Sure you got your nobody getting whacked but Mark McGuire, Raphael Palmerio, Sammy Sosa, Ken Caminiti and others? Jose Canseco came clean and people listened (helping Jose earn a few extra dollars on his book as well). Probably the most shocking result of a steroid rumor was Mark McGuire's denial of entry into Cooperstown. Not even a close vote by any means. The Hall of Fame panel sent a loud and clear message. They are fed up with the steroid rumors and so are its fans.

The real tragedy of this train wreck is the broken trust that now exist between fans and players. This trust is so beyond repair that the FBI and the federal government have stepped in like a mother scolding her oldest for setting a bad example to his younger sibling. Heroes are now gone and resentment has set in. For one year the world was captivated as Sammy Sosa and Mark McGuire raced to break the single season home run record. It was fun and exciting and nerve-racking to the end. The race seems so hallow now. This is what the steroid scandal has done to baseball and its fans. Our memories are robbed and our trust is gone.

Can MLB stop this train wreck? I don't know but baseball season has started and hockey playoffs are beginning next week. So let Barry hit another one, I for one won't be watching. I prefer to keep my interest in a pure sport, one where the players have respect for themselves and for us fans. So long baseball.
