I call my theory on why churches are packed on Easter and not on regular Sundays the Super Bowl theory. Like football, there are mega fans and there are so-so fans of religion. Some people are die-hards that make sure they attend every chance they can because they love feeling that close to the team, err I mean God.
Others don't feel that close to the team/God, but feel an obligation to go when the biggest day of the year for the team/God arrives. Christmas and Easter are the most spectacular Sundays to visit a church in many denominations. Often, these are the only Sunday the choir sings, they have huge displays of flowers and sometimes a kids performance...which brings in all the parents.
Easter is a time of celebration. The ultimate home team always wins! Jesus triumphed over death (saving each of us from our own sin) and every year we have the ultimate gathering of church resources to celebrate this victory! It's the most happy topic/occasion on the church calendar every year. Even those who haven't committed themselves completely to Christ feel the pull to be a part of the party - even though they may not attend another game, err I mean service the rest of the year.
Now, where did I put that face paint? Just kidding...
