Gina Gershon is an actress and songwriter born in the San Fernando Valley (an official 'valley girl.') She had always wanted to be an actress, and starred in a production of "Bye Bye Birdie" at age seven-playing female-lead Rosie even though she had wanted to play Elvis-like Conrad Birdie.
After her parents moved her to Beverly Hills, she graduated high school and moved to Boston but decided wanted to study at NYU instead.
There she met her eventual New York theater group, Naked Angels. She had to start doing films to support them, and so went on some auditions , began landing jobs, and started paying her rent.
One of my first gigs, a movie called "Cocktail", she found herself in bed, practically naked, having to make out with Tom Cruise but there is always hope! Following that she was fortunate enough to play many diversified roles in film, television, and stage. She always did roles she wanted to, whether her managers and agents liked it or not ("nobody sits Baby in the corner" ... her inspiration was Frank Sinatra's "My Way", especially Sid Vicious' version).
One of her favorite jobs was Sam Mendes' Cabaret on Broadway. Not only was Sally Bowles an awesome role, it led her back to one of her first loves singing. Because of Cabaret she was offered the part of a punk rock singer in Prey for Rock and Roll. She got back into her music, eventually going on tour with the band, Girls Against Boys to promote the movie.
The tour is documented in the IFC documentary, Rocked (a must see!). Now she's unstoppably writing and playing music, working on a record now that will be finished soon!
That's the end for now, though you know that she'll keep on acting, singing and composing as long as life thrives!
