I have seen t-shirts that read "Jesus is a Liberal." While I enjoy them for their humor, I think they might be closer to the mark than many conservatives would admit. Many liberal-minded Christians might feel alienated in a community of believers that seems to revolve around the GOP. For that reason, a "Christian Left" party might more accurately represent the values of such voters. What might those values be? Here are some ideas.
1) Christ spent a great deal of time hanging around the poor, the sick, and the outcast. His mercy and compassion would indicate that those fortunate enough to "have" should help those who "have not." It's a very old, very simple, and very timely principle. Are we responsible for taking care of one another? Christ certainly thought so. So let's help one another, right? A government should strive to meet the needs of its people-all its people. Even if it means giving away the shirt on our back.
2) Christ's message was one of love. A peaceful, diplomatic government seems to be more "Christian" than a government bent on warmongering and bullying nations that are economically and militarily weaker than us. Jesus never used force to make his point. In fact, he passively accepted his own death. Show me an America that would sacrifice itself for the good of others. That was Christ's mission all along.
3) Jesus was a teacher. He would value education. It's that simple.
A "Christian Left" does not seem such an unreasonable dream. In fact, by practicing what Christ preached, one is already perhaps more liberal than they might suspect. With a little organization, it could easily become a reality.
