The Ford Mustang, named after a fighter plane, first appeared in 1965. It was immediately popular, selling over 20,000 on its first day in the showrooms. Within two years, sales had hit the million mark. The reason for its success was due to Ford's ability to produce a stylish-looking machine at an affordable price. To ensure affordability, the Mustang shared much of the engineering technology as the Ford Falcon and, indeed, was initially built in the same Michigan plant. However, it was noticeably different form the Falcon. It had a much longer bonnet and shorter rear section, giving a sleeker look to the vehicle.
A new style Mustang was introduced in the late sixties to ward off increasing competition from new Chevrolet models and Ford hasn't stopped since. It is a remarkable achievement that this relatively cheap, mass market car is still selling, and is still loved, today.
