The meaning of Easter and Lent

The season of Lent is a time for deep reflection. We, like Christ, come to Gethsemane to think about the paths we take. It's a time to face the moments we may not be proud of, to acknowledge our shortcomings, and to feel cleansed with a new beginning.

The days leading up to Easter, called Holy Week, can be heavy times to many. After all, reading accounts of Christ's death at the hands of his friends is troubling and moving. But there are silver linings. At the last supper, Christ delivers an eleventh commandment when he tells his disciples to "love one another as I have loved you." It's that message that rises to the surface of the story. Easter is a time of suffering, yes, but it is a time of remembering love. And so we can sort of let our batteries be recharged, our slates wiped of their mistakes, and our tombs be emptied as we reflect upon the meaning of what the Greeks called agape; that is 'sacrificial love.'
