It could be said the best books to read in order to learn how to write fiction are actual works of fiction. So really, before you even spend one dollar on a "how to write" book, cozy up with your favorite author and devour their every word. What makes their writing hum? Why do you want to turn the page? What passages do you wish you would have thought of yourself? Thinking about these questions can help you develop your own voice.
Once you've explored sufficiently, there are a couple of books you might want to pick up to keep you going. Here are a few recommendations:
1) On Writing, by Stephen King. This very meat-and-potatoes approach to the craft is refreshingly honest. It's no secret that King is doing something right in his writing, since people buy his books like their going out of style. He offers down to earth insight into filling your writerly "toolbox" and learning how to use each tool as best you can.
2) So You Want to Be a Writer, by Brenda Ueland. Ueland's book is all about inspiration, especially for the amateur looking to put their creativity to good use. Even if writing isn't necessarily your bag, this book will get you fired up to do what you love.
3) Zen in the Art of Writing, by Ray Bradbury. This is another booked largely concerned with passion rather than form. While Bradbury will not have you diagram any sentences, he will have you thinking about writing with zest and gusto.
4) Burning Down the House, by E. M. Forster. Buy it. Read it. Read it again. It's like a writing workshop in your hands.
Now go have some fun! Your pens await.
