The proper way to place mulch around your tree

The type of mulch that you choose and the way it is applied is vital to the health of your trees. Here are some important guidelines to following when applying mulch.

Inspect the trees and the landscape area around the trees. Determine if the drainage is adequate. Most common mulches are suitable for most landscapes.

If mulch is already laid around the trees, check the depth. If the layer of mulch is sufficient, do not add more. Simply refresh what's there by raking the old mulch to break up matted layers. If you're concerned by the appearance, you may spray the mulch with a water-soluable, vegetable-based dye to improve and enhance the color. Mulch should not be piled against the tree trunks or stems. If it is, then pull it back several inches to expose the base of the trunk and the root crown.

Organic mulches are usually preferred to inorganic materials because of their soil-enhancing properties. If you choose organic mulch, aerate it well and it should be composted. Make sure it's not sour smelling.

Composted wood chips make good mulch, especially if they contain a blend of leaves, bark, and wood. Fresh wood chips may also be used around established trees and shrubs. Avoid using noncomposted wood chips that have been piled deeply without exposure to oxygen.

Apply a 2- to 4-inch layer of mulch if the site is well-drained. However, if drainage is a problem, use a thinner layer. Do not place mulch against any tree trunks. Place mulch out to the tree's drip line or beyond.

Remember: If the tree had its choice, the entire root system (which extends well beyond the drip line) would be mulched.
