I never was a big fan of Sacha Baron Cohen's "Da Ali G Show" but when his movie "Borat" came out, something told me I needed to see it because I would enjoy it. I was totally right, as I found it on of the funnier pictures I had seen in the theater in a long time.
The movie is about Borat Sagdiyev, a journalist in Kazakhstan who goes to America to make a documentary about the greatest country in the world. Along for th ride is their producer, Azamat Bagatov. Once they get to America, they get thrown off track when Borat buys a Baywatch book at a yard sale and falls in love with Pamela Anderson. Suddenly she becomes his obsession and he chases her to California.
Overall, the story isn't much, but it's the people that he meets and interviews along the way that makes the movie so funny. Cohen (as Borat) would interview unsuspecting people who thought they were actually going to be on a documentary and not a major motion picture. These interviews were hilarious, as Cohen found himself doing crazy stunts such as drinking during a driving school lesson. I was even surprised when I saw that one of the interviews was done at a car dealership that is within walking distance of my house.
Manny people were up in arms about this movie. First of all, the people of Kazakhstan were upset about the way their country was portrayed. Also, some of the people who were in the movie and came out looking bad ended up suing the production company. I wish people would lighten up more about this. It was all in fun and it was for comedy. I understand that they were made to look bad, but none got physically hurt and I know this was done for entertainment purposes only.
I have heard that the DVD has some crazy extra features. I have not seen the DVD version yet, just saw it in the theater, but I plan to buy the DVD soon. I would recommend this movie to all comedy movie fans, even if they are not fans of Borat from the Ali G show. I think the movie is entertaining and enjoyable, and hopefully people can get past the fact that some of the jokes come at people's expenses. If you can, then this movie will be almost 90 minutes worth of fun.
