Farewell gifts: What to give as a tangible goodbye

As the song goes, it's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday. The day has come where a loved one is moving away, and you need that something that they will treasure forever as a token of your relationship. The good thing is that it's not so hard to find that special something.

The first idea is a no-brainer with a twist. Involving pictures is always a wonderful, heart-warming idea if you want to be remembered each day. Get a funny or sentimental picture of you and your loved one on a memorable day and place it in a nice picture frame. An even better idea is to get an undecorated frame and paint it yourself, perhaps with little phrases that mean something to the both of you. Inside jokes are always fun.

Another idea involving pictures is to create a collage. Gather all the pictures you have of you two and paste them onto a poster board. Using little bubble thought stickers to narrate the pictures is also encouraged.

Lastly in the picture scene are photo albums and scrap books. Include other things too, such as photocopies of your loved one's place mat that he or she colored at Friendlies, and other such things. Nothing more needs to be said about these, except narrate with funny or touching memories as much as possible!

Next up is the "out there option". Get something totally random or funny and wrap it up for your friend. Any adult toy will do the trick. Or perhaps you have an inside joke that you can manifest itself in a gift. For example, an old friend of mine was obsessed with this video clip of a song called "Lobster Sticks to Magnet". She just had to show me it, and as a result we kept giving lobster related items to each other. The first was a lobster crossing sign that she gave to me for my birthday. Then I shot back with a giant lobster stuffed animal. Later she gave me a plastic lobster that I draped in volleyball net in the corner of my room. We went back and forth with this for a while, and to this day every time I see anything lobster-esque I let out a giggle.

There are many other ideas to be thought up as well, but you will be the only one to think of it. If you were both English Majors in college, write a poem or story about your relationship, or just a nice letter. If you worked at Target together, buy him or her a Target related item, or that one ugly thing that you both made fun of. Perhaps you and your loved one shared many songs that made you both laugh or had sentimental vague. Make a mixed tape or CD with these songs on it. Maybe you let your friend borrow a piece of clothing on several occasions. You could give this item to him or her, or better yet, buy her a brand new one. The list is endless, but whatever you choose will be cherished forever. Just remember, the more personal, the better!
