Want to make a new mom happy? Buy her 6 months of housecleaning or cooking services. New moms are usually not prepared for how needy newborn babies are; they need to be fed, and changed, and bathed, and cuddled, and rocked...usually several times a day. New moms know this, but knowing it doesn't really prepare them for the reality.

Think that this gift may be too intrusive? Buy them a free year of diaper service. You can do this whether they are using cloth diapers or disposable ones. Diapers are one of the biggest expenses with newborns, and money can be tight. When my sister had her first baby, my mom and four aunts pooled their money together for a diaper service. My sister claims it was the best present anyone has ever given her.

Another thoughtful gift, much appreciated by new parents, is free babysitting. Offer to watch the newborn for a few hours once or twice a week so that Mommy can have a break. I did this for my best friend, and she was extremely grateful. She usually used that time to catch up on sleep, or run errands that were difficult to do with a baby in tow.

My final suggestion is one which most people overlook. New moms are generally so busy taking care of their newborns that they neglect to take care of themselves. A gift certificate for a day of pampering is a wonderful gift for a new mom. When one of my co-workers had her first baby everyone in the office pitched in and bought her five gift certificates to a local spa. Each gift certificate was good for a massage, facial, manicure, pedicure and hairstyle.

Moms are busy, and new moms are especially so. Take a moment and do something special for the new mom in your life. She'll be happy you did!
