Horror movies have become a cliche that just seems to be getting more and more gorier and pointless. While there continues to be the occassional good scary movie that comes every so often, it's clear that really great and scary horror movies have become a thing of the past. Luckily, we still have those rare few that continue to do the job, even if you've seen them one too many times. Here are my top three scariest horror movies of all time.
1.) Halloween- Without a doubt, this is the movie that made the whole horror genre worth watching. John Carpenter turned a low-budget horror film into a multi-million dollar masterpiece that still continues to grow in popularity today. Halloween was one of those movies that scared you more with what you didn't see than what you did. The fact that there was very little gore or blood only seemed to add to the whole scariness of the movie rather than take away from it. This movie proves that less is more and you don't necessarily have to be grossed out to find a horror movie appealing and worth seeing.
2.) A Nightmare on Elm Street- Everyone has nightmares, which is why this movie was so scary. The thought of a nightmare actually harming you in real life is something that would keep anyone from going back to sleep, especially if the monster in your dreams looks like Freddy Krueger. Wes Craven not only did a great job coming up with the perfect movie monster, he also made sure that the dream sequences in the film actually resembled that of a real nightmare, which actually made the movie more believable and, in turn, more scary. Even though this movie had considerably more blood and gore than Halloween, it continues to be just as scary and popular with horror fans because of its unique story line and on-the-edge-of-your-seat scare tactics.
3.) Scream- When this movie first came out I must have seen it at the theatres at least six times, and every time I went the theatre was even more crowded than the last. The thing about this movie that appealed so much to people was the fact that it was more realistic than most other horror films. You didn't have an invincible monster that constantly gets killed off only to come back to life minutes later. You knew that the monster in this movie was a real person and it was even scarier that nobody knew just who it was until the end. Knowing that this could actually happen to anybody only makes this movie even more scarier to watch because you just never know what the people around you are capable of.
I'm sure there are millions of other horror films that people would love to add to this list, but the above three are the ones that I think stand out the most in the wonderful world of horror films. Not only have these movies made countless millions off of their franchises, but they also continue to generate a fan base that promises to grow with each new generation of horror fans to come.
