Easter Gifts-for Children and Young Teens
When I was a child, gift giving at Easter was at a minimal. When we were younger, my sister and I were given a small basket a bit of cheap candy. With my children, grandparents have showered them with treats at Easter. Then there is the resurrection party at their school each year.
For the past several years, I have been shifting my approach to Easter giving. I know that I want to give my children gifts as a way to symbolize how momentous Christ's gift of his life was to us as Christians. Yet the traditional Easter baskets felt less as less 'right' as I noticed that my children get candy at their Christian school, at church on Easter Sunday, and from their grandparents.
So this year, I am making up Easter gift bags for each of my children. I visited my local Cracker Barrel (they have a wonderful selection of Easter items) to pick up some token candy items - a small chocolate bunny for each child, a bag of cotton candy 'bunny tails' and a tube of jelly beans with an airplane fan on top for the two boys, and an Easter egg gadget for my young teen daughter.
The major gifts for this years Easter bags come from Christianbook.com and were ordered about three weeks ago. My favorite thing is to go to the site and click on the 'bargain' icon at the top of the home page. This takes you to a page where you have all sorts of choices: under 30 cent items, under 50 cents, under$1, under $5, and so on.
This year, Christianbook.com had a sale on Bible covers, so I ordered a new one for each of my children. I found an unabridged audiodrama version of Pilgrims Progress-the kids and I love to listen to audiodrama in the car. I also discovered another set of audio versions of the Wally MacDoogle books: "My Life as a Smashed Burrito with Extra Hot Sauce" and "My Life as Alien Monster Bait.' For my young teen, I found a Christian teen drama series on DVD. Plus I purchased several books on sale to distribute amongst the three gift bags.
This year I feel more at peace with my gifts to the children for Easter. A bit of candy, yes. But they're also getting "food" for their minds and their souls.
