I was in the 7th grade and this new girl came in. She looked like a boy. My friends weren't sure what to make of her. Her father was in the military and this was her new home. We elected one of our friends to ask her if she was a boy or a girl. She laughed at us and we became fast friends.
Throughout high school we were inseparable. We did everything together. Her brother got sick with cancer and passed away when she was in high school. We cried and laughed and remembered the good times with him.
After high school she moved away for awhile but we kept in contact through mail and letters. When she came back to go to college it was as though she had never left. We were there for each other through the good times and bad. We would tell each other when we were messing up and how we really though about each other's boyfriends. No holding back there.
We eventually found our mates and we approved of them. That is how we both new we had made good choices. Not just anyone was good enough for my friend! She moved away again and throughout the years we kept in contact, first through the mail and then the Internet.
She has since moved back to a couple of hour drive. When we get together it is like we had never been apart. Our partners understand that we are best friends and that we will always be friends and they just have to deal with it.
We have been friends now for 30 years. I appreciate her friendship as much today as I did that first time she laughed. Through the good and bad times I always new she was there for me. I still know she is and that is what makes her my best friend.
I am fortunate in the fact that my partner is my best friend too. I know he is there for me too and will always have my back. I consider myself lucky to have two best friends. A friend is the best present you can give yourself.
