Can distance learning be a substitute for college?

In terms of the degrees you can earn, distance learning can certainly be a substitute for college. If all you want is a degree that will open doors for you in terms of employment and a career, distant learning will work for you. If it suits you in terms of time and money, being able to work at home and not commute, being able to do your classwork when you want and not according to a class schedule, then distant learning is perfect for you.

If the social aspect of college, going to classes, meeting new people, going to sporting events, and generally enjoying the college culture is important to you, then distant learning isn't going to work. The other consideration is the perceived value of your degree. Distant learning degrees are generally not deemed to have the same academic value as most college degrees (depending on the college).

Fundamentally, you have to decide what your needs are and what your situation is. Otherwise, a bachelor's degree by any other means, is still a bachelor's degree.
