I don't think there is such a thing as a wrong ring. It may be the wrong ring for just such an occasion as proposing but, I don't think you will ever hear a woman complain she has too much jewelry.
If it is the special kind of magical I need to get on bended knee ring your looking for, well I suggest shopping together. Sometimes the mans idea of the perfect ring for his perspective hopeful isn't quite what she had in mind.
There is absolutely no harm in going together feeling her/him out on what they like. Then when that special day comes hopefully besides gasping at all the diamonds cause most of them are just so gorgeous you will have a nice selection to choose from. I think in your heart of hearts you will know when you have just the perfect ring for you soulmate.
I think another good thing about picking rings is that, not everyone goes with the traditional diamond now a days. A lot of Celtic rings are being chosen. They are absolutey beautiful and very intricate in their designs and the symbolic meanings are absolutely beautiful.
You can have any stone be your main stone does not have to be a diamond, doesn't even have to be a stone for that matter. Just enjoy what the two of you discussed and picked out together. It is a symbol of love between the two of you.
