Short stories: Desperation

focused long enough for Nate to see it grin wide.

"First, point me toward Sebastian."

Brandon, remembering Nate's broken femur, turned the mirror to face their attacker. Sebastian saw what lurked in the mirror and froze.

"Go away, Sebastian," the apparition stated, rather calmly.

"But Nigel..."

"Now."

Sebastian backed out of the door way, and slumped down the hall.

"Now, gentlemen, release me."

"How," Brandon asked. He knew one thing as certain as he knew his own name: this would not bode well for them.

"You," looking at Brandon, "your blood on the mirror. You," looking at Nate, "say these words exactly as I tell them to you."

Brandon smeared some of his blood onto the mirror and Nate recited the words. The apparition stepped out of the mirror.

Before the two men stood a tall, terrible and slender man, the grin seeming to go from ear to ear. "Well, gentlemen," he said, "I hope you have enjoyed your stay in my house. Nigel trapped me in that damnable contraption years ago, and I've been waiting for someone to set me free. You have my gratitude."

Brandon stood, every muscle tense, blood dripping from his arm. He was right. Damnit, he knew he was right. This was all so very wrong.

"But, as unfortunate as these circumstances are for you two, becoming flesh once again and seeing you here has revived a physical state within that I have not felt for some years now."

The man grinned now again, his lips parting this time, revealing row after row of stained, animal-like teeth.

"I'm afraid that I am hungry."

Nate began to cry.
