Assessing the Berlitz approach to foreign language study

The strength of the Berlitz method is the fact that it immerses you in the language. It simulates how you would learn a language if you traveled to that country, or if you were a child learning that language.

Unfortunately, it does not overcome the biggest difficulty that an adult has in learning a language-in fact, no language program does-and that is the amount of time one has to be exposed to a language before they start to become proficient in it.

Many students complain that a year of language study didn't significantly increase their skill with the language. And if you are only doing the bare minimum, you are only doing about 200 hours a year-you need about 2000 hours (ten years worth) to be fluent in a language. Plus in order to maintain your skill in a language, you must continue using it.
