Reflections on beauty: 'Beauty is but in the eyes of the beholder'

How many times can we say we were wrong in our lives when it came to what we thought was beautiful only to find the opposite?

Growing up we are influenced by what appears to be beautiful, but as we grow and mature, we realize that sometimes beauty is only what we see on the surface, and the real beauty is what is hidden waiting to be discovered.

Admittedly, I was always one who would consider what my eyes would see as criteria for showing any interest in someone or something.

In some cases, this can be the way for a lifetime, and never experiencing how much more beauty can be found if one allows for the chance to discover those hidden qualities.

I'm ashamed to say that during those immature years I would go along with the crowd in determining who would fit and who did not. So it became somewhat of the norm to judge everyone and everything by how they look on the surface.

As time went on, something strange took over my thinking. I happen to frequent a restaurant where several of the waitresses were just beautiful, and one in particular was so downright homely and unattractive, it could ruin an appetite. I know this sounds cruel and shallow, but the fact of the matter was she didn't do so well as a result of it.

However, she provided service always with a smile, always efficient and cheerful,
and just as sweet as the desert menu. But still, her tips suffered as most felt that they didn't have to feel obligated as she wasn't worth the thought in their minds.

Time after time as I would see her struggle through the day trying to do her best, I realized what a truly beautiful and caring person she was. I made it a point to sit at her station, and when done my meal, I would leave her a generous tip.

The impression this made on her produced the most amazing smile of appreciation that overshadowed her lack of superficial beauty.
It was as though there was an Angel inside her that was radiating this beautiful aura all around her.

Somehow the thought came to me that this could have been a test, and I passed with flying colors, for now I've matured to the point that I could recognize this in the least of what would be considered someone of beauty.

Those that have outside beauty have to work extremely hard at being truly beautiful. But those that have the natural beauty inside just let it be discovered, and it is they who discover this inner beauty that are the lucky ones. The universal law applies in every aspect of our lives and throughout the universe.

And so it goes with beauty. In rare cases, there are those who not only possess it outside, but also inside as well.
Could these simply be angels among us?
