Be sure to have a roadside assistance package in case your car needs to be towed. Have a gallon of tap water, in case you need to add it to the radiator/along with having a container of oil. Stop for fuel frequently - you never know when you will find gas stations to be closed - or low on fuel. Keep healthy snacks in the car to help with hunger pangs. Have a gallon of spring/purified water for drinking. In case it is going to be cold anywhere along your route - be sure to have blankets/thermal socks/gloves in case your car breaks down, and you can't get assistance right away. Have a battery-powered radio, with extra batteries in case your radio stops working. Take a supply of quarters in case your cell phone stops working/breaks, and also for doing laundry along the way. Make sure someone who is not on the trip with you, knows where you are at all times. Check your tire pressure often - along with checking the quality of the tread. If your window wipers don't seem to working as well as they should - have them replaced as soon as possible.
