One of the coolest online writing sites that I have heard of is Constantcontent.com. You submit your articles, and buyers buy them. It really is that simple, and it's free to sign up!
Also, you can do blogging. There are blogging sites like WritingUp.com, where you submit blogs and you generate money based on ad clicks. It's also free to sign up for those. Another blog site is bloggerparty.com.
Then, there are sites like paidwriter.com, where you write articles as needed by the site. In other words, a buyer will request an article, and the owner of paidwriter.com will post that need. You then write the article. They only pay about $4 per article though.
It also pays to be knowledgeable in a certain area. If you are, you could be a guide for About.com. They hire people to write on a certain topic. It's a lot of hard work, and you need the right credentials, like a college degree and experience in the area you want to write about. Suite101.com is a lot like that as well.
From what I have noticed, getting paid to write online takes a lot of hard work and perserverance. However, I think it's worth it to stay at home and exercise your brain each day.
