Sizzling tips for a summer diet

Summer is just around the corner and the number one fear of those with a little excess baggage is getting into those shorts or swimsuits after a month of hibernating in baggy sweat pants and winter coats.

You can start making plans this summer to 'sizzle' your way to a healthier and slimmer lifestyle.

Early Spring veggies are already hitting the markets and fresh, sweet satisfying fruits are not far behind! For a Sizzling Summer Diet that doesn't feel like a diet, try theses healthy and satisfying tips.

1. Enjoy in season veggies. Many 'early' lettuce, peas and greens only have a short availability. Enjoy them while you can. try fresh sugar peas, baby greens, early peas, baby Bib lettuce and others your market may carry from local farms in your area.

2. Use those early veggies to enjoy at least one large freshly made salad per day. Easy on the dressings and croutons. Really young, tender veggies need little additional flavor. A trick I use is to dip my fork into dressing I have on the side before getting a forkful of salad. Just the right 'taste' of dressing without the calories!

3. How many fresh fruits can you name? If your list stops with the usual apples, oranges, grapefruits and bananas, now is the time to really take a look at the fruits available in the produce section or better yet, those roadside fruit stands that will soon be popping up! Even the most 'tropical' fruits tend to be affordable during the summer season. make it a goal to add one or two fresh new fruit tastes to your plate each week. Needs some suggestions? How about star fruits, mangoes, kumquats, all varieties of grapes...get several varieties and taste test them at the same time, you may find a new favorite! Fruit in the morning and snack times is a good way to maintain consistent blood sugar levels as well as fiber!

4. Drink plenty of WATER! Pack bottled water on every outing. Freeze a couple bottles, grab one as you head out the door to enjoy a nice long walk! It will melt slowly and stay cold to offer a refreshing break. you just may find yourself walking longer with a cool drink at hand!

5. Get outside for at least 30 minutes of sun a day. Sunshine is still the BEST source of Vitamin D. Don't forget the sunscreen.

Following these simple tips daily can give you a great start towards your diet goals. who knows, those shorts may not fit so bad after all!
