Most companies these days allow employees to use the company email system. However, some take advantage of this, and tend to forget where they're at.
Company email is a privilege, and you should be respectful of the policies your company sets forth. Don't treat it as though it were some kind of right owed to you. It is nice to come in to work and check your email, and send things of interest to friends and family.
You should never use vulgarities, or say anything inappropriate or hurtful. I had a friend who used to email me from work, and it would get pretty racy. Well one day she left work early and forgot to sign out. Everybody in the office knew the extent of our conversations. I refused to talk to her while at work anymore, I didn't want my private thoughts being read by strangers. Plus, it don't reflect well on the company.
Remember you are on company time too, so don't be spending a lot of time on personal business at the computer, just because everybody does it still don't make it right. Follow the policy set by your particular company, and don't take advantage of their generosity. The last time I checked, email was not listed in the Bill of Rights.
