The best way to keep your sanity intact is to be as prepared as you possibly can. The most important tip is to bring plenty of money with you. Chances are that you will end up needing more than you think you do. The best way to lose your sanity is to not have enough money to afford the things you need or cover an emergency. If you have money left over after you're trip is over you can always take it home with you. A cell phone and a charger is also a great thing to take with you incase of an emergency.
Also, don't forget those maps to help you navigate and to assist you incase you get lost. If you have a GPS or can afford to buy one, that will be even better. Getting lost is agonizing and very inconvenient, especially if you're traveling with youngsters. Whether you're going alone or with others, a delay in getting to your destination is just no fun at all. If you do get lost and find maps or your navigation system to be unhelpful, stop and ask for help as soon as you can. Getting lost can drive anyone insane, so the longer your lost the more insane you'll go. The sooner you get back on the road and on the way to the destination, the saner you'll be.
With gas prices being so high, it's enough to make anyone insane. Be sure your vehicle is checked out and in good order before you leave. The more efficient your car is, the less gas it'll waste. Know where the cheapest gas stations are before you leave. This can be done by doing research online, or looking at state guides.
Bring plenty of music, books, and activity books along with you to help pass the time. It's always a good idea to bring along some of your favorite music. It's going to be a long drive, so you need to have things to keep it entertaining. However, don't overdo it on the entertainment stuff since the more weight you have in your car, the most gas it will use up. Be sure to remember to plan ahead for time. The sooner you get to your destination the better, so plan to be quick at rest stops, and plan to avoid tourist traps and distractions. Most importantly, keep your eye on the road and always stay focused. If you need to take a break from driving, let someone else drive for a while, or stop and take a few moments to relax.
Make sure you get plenty of sleep as well. You want to be fully alert while you are driving. Not getting enough sleep is also a good way to lose your sanity. Take some pain relievers with you in case you get a headache, driving with a headache can make anyone insane. If night driving makes you go insane, drive during the day and rest at night. Remember to stay safe, and be careful out there. Remember to have fun on your trip and enjoy yourself!
