It is when everything we know to be true gets completely turned around. By that definition, our own church is going through a transfiguration. The familiar has changed, the routine is broken. This is a scary time for us. We were all very comfortable with the way things were. We had James to lead us, nurture us, and push us a little. But now, Jesus is calling for us to make a change. He is calling for us, like Peter, to gather our courage even though we are shaking in our shoes and say, let's stick around a while, let's explore this.
The light of Jesus isn't just on that mountain. The light of the transfiguration is in all of us. It is up to us to leave the comfortable and familiar and embrace that light. It is up to us to lead this church to Jesus. He is the way, He is the corner stone, He is the reason we are all here. Yes, we love the comfort of our fellowship and we still have that. Yes, we loved James and we always will and he will always be with us. But in the endIt's all about Jesus. It is all about spreading that light. It is all about embracing the challenges that Jesus has presented to us. It's about stepping out of the familiar and embracing what comes, even if it is scary. This is scary, standing here in front of this church talking to you. This is not my comfort zone. I am supposed to be sitting right about there; next to my dad listening to James do his thing. I am supposed to be helping dad with the elevator and buzzing around saying hello to everyone. But the routine has been broken and now the Lord has challenged me and the other deacons to help carry on. Little did I know that my faith journey would bring me to this pulpit. A year ago I would have told you it would never happen. Trying to find a new pastor is scary. Who knows how long it will take and how are we ever going to find another James. The routine has been broken and now the Lord has challenged the pastor search committee to find someone new. It's scary for all of you to. Your routine is broken and now the Lord is asking you to embrace change. He is asking you to nourish and support a new leader as that leader nourishes and supports you. He is asking you to trust. Some of you have been through this before. Some of us have not.
We, as Christians, often times find ourselves falling into a comfortable routine. We go to church on Sundays, work on our committees, we pray for others, and follow the rules and that works pretty well until something shakes us. Sooner or later something happens
