is shaking things up a little. When our happy little crew reached their destination, things got very uncomfortable for them. "Then Jesus was transfigured before them. His robes became dazzling white such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses who were talking with Jesus." (Mark 9: 2-4) Suddenly here is Jesus, transfigured before them, glowing, and Elijah and Moses are speaking to him. This is not normal. At that moment, the disciple's happy, comfortable little world got turned around. They saw this and were terrified. Just to make it extra scary, Jesus is talking to Moses and Elijah! This is huge! Two of God's chosen people are here, talking to Jesus. Finally, Peter manages to gather what courage he has left and speaks to Jesus. "Rabbi it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah."(Mark 9:5) He basically says to Jesus that even though he is shaking in his shoes, this is a good thing, let's explore this, let's stick around a while. Well, ladies and gentlemen, that took some guts. Here is Jesus, glowing like a light bulb, transfigured, and talking to people who are supposed to be dead. The other two are to scared to move but Peter approaches Jesus and speaks to him. This seems like a good place to wrap up this story but wait.there's more.
We have another plot twist. God himself shows up. "Then a cloud overshadowed them and from the cloud there came a voice, "This is my Son the Beloved; listen to him." Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus."(Mark 9:7-8) This is a significant moment. God himself introduces Jesus as his Son and suddenly Moses and Elijah are gone. God has told us that things have changed and now it is all about Jesus. Listen to him.
The familiar had changed. Peter, James, John and Jesus come down the mountain following a new path. Of course, the disciples already followed Jesus. They already believed in him but nothing drives it home quite like God himself saying "this is my Son." Even for the disciples, the familiar had changed. Little did they know the journey had only just begun. From that moment and through his resurrection, Jesus would constantly challenge his disciples to face change and to strive to spread the Good News. He challenges us all to look beyond the familiar and embrace the changes and challenges in our lives.
The Transfiguration is a turning point, a change, a break from the routine.
