How to motivate your staff

Sometimes we all need cheerleading, someone or something to switch our gears. In the workplace it is especially important to keep everyone at, or near 100%. This can be quite a task sometimes, given all the variables in peoples lives, at work and otherwise.

Negative attitudes can drag people down, and they are contagious as well. Some folks are natural curmudgeons and only see the bad in everything, fortunately this type of person is a rarity. However, they have the ability to drag others down with them. So identifying these individuals and keeping them as far away from the rest of the staff as possible is crucial.

Most everyone at one time or another will need a jump-start. As humans, it is impossible to be 'on' all the time. When it affects productivity it is time to address it.

Incentives can come in different forms, the most effective is money. Wholesale bonuses are good for a short term fix, but incentive pay, based on production is a better longterm solution. When a one-time bonus is spent, things will slide back to the way they were fairly quickly. Monthly or quarterly incentives will keep people on their toes, at least for a while.

People love to be told how good their work is, don't hold back on the compliments. Don't lavish false praise though, smart people see through that. Also ask opinions, and have meetings for all to attend. Make them feel like part of the game, not just hired hands.

Treat them well, and with respect, and they will motivate themselves.
